Beyond Words, Through Sound

There are moments when music allows us to experience something that words cannot fully express.

In Kirtan, voices come together through repetition, melody, and rhythm. What begins as singing can gradually become an experience of listening, presence, and connection.

Different voices, sounds, and traditions meet. Each retains its own expression while becoming part of a larger whole.

There is no need to sing beautifully, understand every word, or arrive with a particular belief.

Only the willingness to participate, in whatever way feels natural.

The Practice of Singing Together

Kirtan is a form of collective singing rooted in the devotional traditions of India.

Traditionally, a leader offers a phrase or mantra, and the group responds. Through repetition, the music gradually unfolds, creating a shared rhythm of sound and silence.

At Beyond, our gatherings draw from different contemplative traditions, allowing melodies, mantras, and songs to meet in an open and inclusive space.

Some people sing. Others listen. Some close their eyes, while others simply enjoy the music and the presence of those around them.

There is no prescribed way to participate.

Beyond the Individual Voice

When we sing together, something interesting can happen.

We begin by hearing our own voice, perhaps noticing its qualities, limitations, or uncertainties.

Gradually, our attention may shift toward the whole.

Individual voices remain distinct, yet they contribute to a shared experience that none could create alone.

Kirtan offers an opportunity to explore this relationship between individuality and unity — not as an idea to believe, but as something we may experience directly.

A Gathering Open to Everyone

Our Kirtan gatherings are informal and welcoming.

Music, rhythm, and repetition create a space where people of different backgrounds and experiences can participate together.

No previous experience with Kirtan, singing, or yoga is necessary.

You are welcome to sing, listen, or simply be present.
